When you have a label that will come into direct contact with a raw food product, the material used in printing and the adhesive will need to meet strict FDA guidelines. This applies to labels that touch the surface of fruits and vegetables, such as apples, or the peel of bananas and other produce.
Indirect Contact Labels
Adhesive labels that do not touch the surface of a raw food product, but are still in direct contact with the packaging or the product itself, must also meet FDA guidelines. This is particularly important if the package contains thin barriers that would allow adhesives to migrate from the label.
Indirect food contact labels also include those that are applied to external packaging with microperforations or thicker materials that may not be intended to touch the surface of a raw food product. This can be an extremely dangerous situation because even minute amounts of ink or adhesive could contaminate the food product, causing it to change flavor or smell.
Food Grade Adhesives
When you want to use a specific food safe adhesive, the adhesive manufacturer should submit a food contact number (FCN). An FCN can be submitted by any company that manufactures or supplies the particular product for which it was created. An FCN is the most efficient and convenient way for FDA to clear a new substance for use in food contact applications. Unlike a TOR exemption, an FCN does not specify a specific purpose for the substance and allows anyone to use it in food contact applications under the conditions specified in the FCN.
