These mollusks can be found on beaches around the British Isles and are harvested by hand at low tide. They can grow to a size of 2 inches (5.1 cm) and are generally smaller.

While cockles are commonly found in shallow waters, some species can reach deep waters of up to 1,500 feet. Their shallow-burying environment allows them to grow and reproduce. Most species of cockles have a long breeding season during which they shed their eggs and sperm into the sea to fertilize the water. Once the larvae have developed shells, they metamorphosed to a mollusk.
